The rankings of the 2025 top 100 list clearly divide central Chinese urban tiers. Wuhan steadily holds the 9th national spot as the sole central city within the top ten, claiming the title of central China’s No.1 without dispute. Changsha and Hefei, core provincial capitals also in central China, rank 13th and 16th respectively, forming an obvious ranking tier gap with Wuhan. Clear disparities separate the two cities from Wuhan in terms of transportation radiation, industrial foundation and comprehensive education & research resources.

Wuhan’s secure position as central China’s leader stems from its status as a national comprehensive transportation hub connecting nine provinces. Changsha’s economy is supported by construction machinery and cultural tourism consumption, while Hefei achieves overtaking via semiconductors and new energy. Both cities feature obvious single industrial tracks. Changsha lacks sufficient high-end basic research resources and holds a weak foreign trade logistics hub grade; Hefei suffers clear weaknesses in urban volume and inland river shipping, with radiation limited to its own province and partial neighboring zones, unable to form a cross-regional central hub. The competitive landscape of central cities cannot be rewritten in the short term, and Wuhan firmly retains its regional central status. For Changsha and Hefei to narrow the tier gap, they must remedy weaknesses in transportation hubs and comprehensive education research resources, expand cross-regional industrial radiation capacity, and mount a challenge to Wuhan’s leading ranking.
