In the current discourse on residential design, we have witnessed an overload of stylistic accumulation and symbolic excess. However, for the Oak Bay project in Wuhan, the design’s starting point was not the indoctrination of a predetermined style, but a rational discourse on “identity” and the “essence of living.” The constraints of the original architectural structure became the catalyst for the design logic. Facing a kitchen of merely 2.7㎡ that needed to accommodate a double-door refrigerator, alongside a layout with three redundant bathrooms, the primary task was not beautification, but resolving fundamental functional contradictions through precise “spatial surgery” .
The core strategy of the design lies in the redefinition and reshaping of the boundaries between “public” and “private.” The designer made a bold trade-off: the impractical guest bathroom at the entrance was divided into a foyer cloakroom and a storage room, integrating shoe changing, coat hanging, and storage functions. This decision not only solved the storage痛点 at the entrance but also established a “dirt buffer zone” and a “psychological transition zone” at the threshold. Simultaneously, addressing the “decentralized” social needs of the young elite couple, the designer completely demolished the closed kitchen walls, fully opening the dining and kitchen spaces to the living room. This LDK (Living, Dining, Kitchen) integration was not a blind pursuit of trends but a scenario-based deduction of the couple’s lifestyle—transforming cooking from isolated labor into a social interaction with guests, thereby infinitely amplifying the psychological scale of the space .

In terms of spatial proportion and interface treatment, the design demonstrates high restraint. To alleviate the oppressive feeling and wasted area of the narrow hallway, the designer integrated the master bedroom, study, cloakroom, and master bathroom into an oversized south-facing master suite. The brilliance lies in “view management”: through operable invisible doors and partitions, previously isolated spaces are connected into a circulating path. Material continuity plays a decisive role here—the dark wood of the study transitions into the Victorian blue of the bedroom in color and texture, ensuring a sense of enclosure in the private domain while eliminating the monotony of the long corridor through visual penetration . This is not merely functional integration but a deep concern for the psychological well-being of the residents.

The color and material strategy serves the expression of “light” in “light luxury”—an unpretentious refinement. The space uses white and warm gray as a base, creating a pure canvas, then introduces a vibrant dark green velvet sofa as a visual anchor. Instead of complex carvings or traditional American columns, the design defines quality through minimalist lines and brass accents. The fireplace element is retained, but it serves not merely as a stylistic symbol but as a “thermodynamic center” visually凝聚 family emotions in the living room. This is a “de-stylized” expression of light luxury, emphasizing the tactile quality of materials and the play of light and shadow over formal complexity .

The lighting system plays the role of a “spatial mood creator.” Considering the limitations of residential codes on ceiling height and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) lines, the main lighting abandons large crystal chandeliers in favor of a mapless design. The combination of magnetic track lights and linear light strips not only mitigates the impact of beams on clear height but also washes the ceiling with indirect light, creating a sense of suspension. Accent lighting precisely hits the dark green sofa, marble fireplace, and dining area textures, using the contrast of highlights and shadows to define the “light luxury” tone—a compromise to architectural physics but a precise upgrade to visual aesthetics .
The FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment) configuration represents the terminal presentation of the design strategy, emphasizing “restraint” and “negative space.” In response to the impactful hardscape lines, the soft furnishings opt for voluminous, comfortable furniture to create balance, exemplified by the dark green velvet sofa dominating the living room’s visual center. The woven texture of the rug, the greenery of eucalyptus leaves, and the bronze hardware collectively build a backdrop that withstands the test of time. This reflects a precise understanding of the young elite clientele: they seek a space that is “theirs,” not a showroom of a certain “style.” The value of design lies in providing a vessel capable of holding individual memories and possibilities for growth, rather than a solidified aesthetic cage .
Design Judgement: True luxury is not the accumulation of visual elements, but the granting of the freedom for “self-containment” within a space, achieved through precise reorganization of circulation and deep responsiveness to psychological needs under constrained physical conditions.
